Family : Phyllanthaceae/Euphorbiaceae
An attractive small bushy shrub or tree from the Iron Range area of Cape York Peninsula in North Queensland. It has red fruits and will grow to 3-4 m with soft deep burgundy-red ovate leaves. Can possibly be grown as far south as Sydney at least I would imagine. Easy from cuttings and seed germinates reliably. Grows in shade or full sun with the leaves a deeper burgundy in full sun.
The CSIRO Key (2010) provides descriptive details of 4 species of Breynia :
Breynia cernua
Breynia oblongifolia
Breynia sp. Black Mountain (B.Hyland 25658RFK)
Breynia stipitata
The Queensland Plant Census 2013 only lists 2 species
Breynia cernua
Breynia oblongifolia
I am under the impression that Breynia stipitata is now regarded as a synonym of Breynia Cernua.
My research to date has been unable to establish if Breynia sp. Iron Range is regarded as just a leaf colour variant of Breynia cernua OR is a new species pending.
Certainly the maroon leaved species pictured above has been widely sold in many plant nurseries both in Australia and overseas as Breynia sp. Iron Range.
