Tamarind Rainforest Arboretum is a tranquil but private arboretum on Mount Cockscomb Road at Upper Lansdowne in the lush Manning Valley and is one of the more impressive arboretums on the Mid North Coast of NSW.
In 2019 the arboretum narrowly avoided destruction in the horrific Rumba Dump bushfire which burned all the way from Elands to Upper Lansdowne, along the way totally destroying my friend Evan Ahern's excellent rainforest arboretum just a few kilometres away also along Mount Cockscomb Road. Evan also lost his house in that devastating fire. Having lost everything he had worked so hard for over more than 15 years he immediately put the property on the market and subsequently purchased a cleared fire safe property at Mullumbimby in early 2020 which he has since totally planted out with local and North Queensland rainforest trees.

Many species growing here at Tamarind have not been successfully grown in other local Mid North Coast arboretums.
Located on a tributary of the Lansdowne River the arboretum is planted along a creek, therefore being subject to occasional serious flooding, the last such damaging flooding occurring in mid March 2021.
Nevertheless the trees have survived, albeit with a little standing up, re-staking and with protective rock barriers to prevent root erosion.
Of particular interest are quite a few species from Far North Queensland, including a number of difficult to grow (this far south) Proteaceae species.
In this image the advanced trees on the far left are Toona ciliata - Red Cedar and the small densely foliaged tree in the middle foreground is Argyrodendron peralatum. On the far right is a large Elaeocarpus grandis. Along the back is a very healthy Alloxylon pinnatum. It was flowering magnificently at the time of my visit and is the only tree of this species I've come across at lower altitude south of Bellingen. Alongside it is Alloxylon flammeum, also flowering magnificently. Over to the right,
Darlingia ferruginea and also Darlingia darlingiana were well advanced and also flowering.
I hope to return to this arboretum in the near future to photograph some of the other species that I had no time to examine on this trip.
