Icelandic Falcon
It is the largest falcon species in the world and is known for its incredible hunting abilities and adaptability to harsh environments. Iceland has a relatively large population of gyrfalcons compared to other regions, and they are an important part of the country's natural heritage.

The Gyrfalcon is considered a native species to Iceland, and is believed to have colonized the island during the last Ice Age, roughly 10,000 years ago, as the glaciers retreated, making it a long-established resident of the region; it is even considered the national bird of Iceland.

Ferruginous Hawk
The Ferruginous Hawk is the largest and heaviest of the buteo hawks. The Ferruginous Hawk’s legs are covered in feathers all the way down to its toes. Wing span 4 – 5 feet.
The ferruginous hawk is a well-regarded falconry bird, though not recommended for beginners due to its large size, power, and aggressive personality.

There are about 250 species of owls in the world. They live on every continent except icy Antarctica. Nineteen owl species are found in the United States.
In some parts of the American West, the long-legged Burrowing Owl is known as the “howdy owl” because it seems to nod in greeting at passers-by. This up-and-down action, however, is really just the owl sizing up potential danger.

Common east of the Rockies in woods, suburbs, and parks, the Eastern Screech-Owl is found wherever trees are, and they’re even willing to nest in backyard nest boxes. These supremely camouflaged birds hide out in nooks and tree crannies through the day, so train your ears and listen for them at night.

People who train raptors are called falconers. Falconry is the practice of training birds of prey to hunt game in their natural habitat. Falconers typically train falcons, hawks, and bald eagles.
Falconry is considered to be one of the oldest sports in the world.

The Second Coming by William Butler Yeats
“Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity…”
