Notes: the occasion was the official opening of extensions to the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital. HRH, Henry Duke of Gloucester was at that time the Governor General of Australia (1945-47).

Mayor Freelander accompanies Henry Duke of Gloucester and Alice Duchess of Gloucester down the front steps of the Carrington Hotel, PM Ben Chifley behind them.

Instructions to the hotel included: ice, bitters and gin for the Duke on arrival, beer for the Duke at lunch, fruit juice for the Duchess, no soup or oysters and no addresses of any description during lunch.

According to the official schedule the party left the dining room at 1.55 pm to inspect a guard of ex-servicemen at the front of these steps.
