Photo Notes:
Members of the Pickwick Corresponding Club took the names of characters from the Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. Alfred Allen (Samuel Pickwick Esq), William Petford Allen (Nathaniel Winkle Esq), William Walters Farmer (Samuel Weller), Kate Ethel Fry (Mrs Bardell), Edith Ada Fry (Aunt Rachel), Mary Amelia Allen (Arabella Allen).
Alfred Allen may be seen holding the camera release string in his right hand; while the women are looking pretty fed up.
Alfred Allen wrote a description of their trip to Jenolan Caves, with illustrations and tintype photos of which this is one. A facsimile edition was published in 2012, edited by Jim Smith.
The saddle belongs to their pack pony, 'Punch, the black horse'.
