An Dubh Lochan is located in Glen Spean in the West Highlands of Scotland. This image shot on the 12th February 2016 shows the ice melting on the top of the lochan while the sun hides behind some cloud as it dips below the mountain. It was a gorgeous day with blue sky and some cloud and I am already planning my next visit here.

What an expedition it was today, a round trip of 16 hours which included time at the location plus the drive there and home again but it was worth it for this and several other shots I captured today, most successful day I have had with the camera in a while and I loved every minute of it. This is Loch Treig in the Highlands of Scotland, you will find it located east of Spean Bridge near to Roy Bridge, I highly recommend spending time here, even on a day like today when the snow coming down eventually put an end to the walking.

Scotland as a country has so much to offer the photographer and digital artist and I have to say that I have been very spoiled by managing over the years to make many journeys into the Highlands but I have been a little guilty of neglecting the lowlands to the south of the country. During the course of this year I am aiming to put that right because just recently I took a journey into the Galloway Forest and along the banks of Loch Doon. I travelled beyong the proper tarmac road and onto the dirt tracks and I haven't felt so inspired to look at things so differently in a long time. If you come to Scotland, don't miss out on the beauty and subtlety that the south of Scotland has to offer. In this picture we are viewing Loch Doon from the north west to the south east and this location is a very short drive from one of Scotlands Dark Sky projects as it is unspoiled for stargazing by light pollution.

Loch Etive in the west highlands of Scotland is one of the most dramatic locations to reach with stunning scenery over Rannoch Moor to the edge of the Glencoe valley where you make a left turn into Glen Etive, the next 7 miles are through some of the most stunning landscapes you will see as you approach the head of Loch Etive.
