A view of 31-41 Shambles reposted, with a little editing, to mark the fifth anniversary of my finishing the drawing. The buildings mostly date from the 15th century but with many later alterations and repairs. A couple of the buildings retain shelves, or shamels, for displaying goods and meat as many of the shops in the street were used by butchers. Drawn in an A4 sketchbook with HB leads in a Staedtler Graphite 0.3mm pencil.

Not quite the picture I had in mind when I started the drawing but an interesting collection of buildings of different dates that is typical of York. I had intended to show more of Barker Tower but ran out of space in my Moleskine sketchbook after drawing the top of the Aviva Building. Built in 1993, as the regional headquarters of the insurance company, it was designed by the architects Hurd Roland. Rising to six storeys in parts it is faced with magnesium limestone and is described as being inspired by Edwin Lutyens' Castle Drogo. In front of it is the toll booth of Lendal Bridge of 1863 and peeping into the lower right corner of the drawing is the 14th century Barker Tower, also known as North Street Postern tower. Drawn with a Pentel 0.5mm pencil in an A5 size Moleskine sketchbook.
