These ruins are located near Furnace Creek. This Borax refinery built in 1882 processed the Boron ore from the nearby salt flats where Chinese laborers scraped it from the salt flat surface. The processed Borax was then transported to market by the famous 20 mule teams a distance of 165 miles.

Twenty mule teams hauled the Borax from the Harmony Borax Works to market in Mojave CA a distance of 165 miles and took 10 days to complete. The 120 foot train hauled 1200 gallons of drinking water and 36 tons of borax.
