GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK - COLORADO
My wife and I had just finished hiking up to High Dune and were sitting down to enjoy the view for awhile. I overheard a woman's voice and the excited screams and laughter of a child well below us and noticed a mother and her son climbing a dune ridge. The mother was steadily moving forward while her son would playfully lag behind and then run to meet her. Together, alone in this expanse of sand I thought of the bond between them and captured the moment.

I very rarely include human figures in any of my images. When photographing sand dunes, I especially go out of my way not to include human activity which distracts from the natural beauty of the dunes, their soft curves, shadows and textures. Sitting atop High Dune, I was fascinated by the footprint patterns on the adjoining dune. Some were sharp and made just minutes before I took this image, while others were softly windswept and appeared to be days old. The timely arrival of the lone hiker gave a sense of scale.
