The Kiswahili words mean, "I will be back soon." Nairobi, Kenya, is a distant world from where I was born and live. This view from my hotel room at. the Doubletree Nairobi Hurlingham before flying back to America reveals a mosque in the background and what looks like a church in the foreground. I see smog, though perhaps not much for a city of 4 million because there are fewer cars. It's only September but the sun is setting at 6:30 p.m. -- just as it always sets at 6:30 p.m. every day of the year, and rises every morning at 6:30 a.m. -- because this a equatorial Africa. It's the beginning of spring today, and not autumn, because we're south of the equator. It's kind of dangerous down there in the inner city, and the hotel has a lot of security -- reinforced steel gates, a bomb detector for luggage, a metal detector for guests and staff. But just a few miles away from this crowded city is the only national park adjacent to a world capital, Nairobi National Park, where just a few stout fences keep lions and leopards and elephants and giraffes from wandering into town. And an hour's drive away the wild lands filled with predator carnivores and their grazing prey. A very different world from what I usually live in -- and I hate it every time I have to leave it to fly home. I'll be back in February 2025. ©2022 | John M. Hudson
