An old steam engine chugs through the English countryside on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The English engines are not as muscular as their U.S. cousins but they still throw off a nice plume of smoke. And their whistles are the real deal. My grandfather worked for the railways for over 50 years as a fireman and an engineer. Some of my fondest moments were accompanying him to the round house and getting to meet the engineers and yardmen. He's been dead for close to 20 years now and I still think about him every time I see or hear a train rumble by. That's a fine to tribute to a fine man. They don't make them any better.

Standing in St. James Park looking through the trees at the symbol of the British monarchy. Actually, several years ago, the Queen moved to Windsor Castle and the old palace became the administrative hub for the monarchy. Quite an office building me thinks. Wonder how fast the WiFi is.

After a particularly brutal night of pub crawling in Soho, and almost being run over multiple times by those giant double decker buses that come at you on the wrong side of the street, at least from the perspective of this Yankee from the West Coast U.S., I found myself hankering for a kebab. Kebabs and beer--the perfect combo to wipe out the memory of those pesky buses.

I was prowling the streets of London near Leicester Square when I got the sudden hankering for a beer. Luckily, it is quite easy to satisfy this kind of craving in London. The local yellow pages list over 10,000 pubs to choose from. In fact, you can flick a spitball in any direction and the odds of it hitting a pub are almost certain. The only problem is coping with the "option anxiety" that sets in when you confront the sheer multitude of available choices for spending your £3 sterling. And you wonder why I drink.
