I have no real New Year's resolutions. I learned long ago that it was crazy to make promises to myself that I would not keep. However, I do hope to treat the coming year much like a trip into the great wide open.

A fence line pierces through the high desert north of Reno, Nevada. This area, east of the Sierra Nevada Range, is the land of sage brush. The landscape here is not for everyone, but I find it to have a stark beauty that is beautifully devoid of human activity.

The New Year has arrived and with it the hope that 2021 will be a better year than the last. There are reasons to be optimistic-- they are appearing on our distant horizon, beckoning us forward, like these glimmering hills calling us to to leave the desert and follow them into the beauty of the eastern Sierra Nevada Range. We just need to set our course toward them.

Today, in my mind's eye, I continue to follow a dirt track into the high desert in Lassen County. The desert colors are quite delicious here--earthy tones that stretch to the distant hills. Jack rabbits dart through the brush keeping a low profile, always mindful of the coyotes and hawks. Personally, I'm more mindful of the rattlesnakes and keep a close watch as to where I step. After all, this is their domain. Not mine. Still, it does not deter me from seeing the beauty in this arid land, and reflecting on what an amazing world we live in.
