Stewart's Point is a nice little gem located along the rugged Sonoma County Coast. It sports a world class general store that has one of the best delicatessens I've encountered. Never mind that the store is surrounded by abandoned and weathered buildings on all sides.

The surrounding ocean front property has been owned by the Richardson family for generations, but from the looks of it, their glory days as ranchers has long past. The current generation owes their lineage to Herbert Archer Richardson who arrived from New Hampshire in 1876 with his new bride and a scant 40 cents in his pocket. The Richardson family still owns and operates the store.

This is great spot for the photog who likes to capture abandoned and weathered buildings. Make sure to bring a little extra money for a sandwich. Just a hint: don't think for a minute that you can arrive here with a mere 40 cents in your pocket.

Abandonment is a theme that intrigues me, especially where photography is concerned. It's easy to feel sad and nostalgic in the face of it. Yet, I find great beauty in the various stages of decay, almost as if I'm granted a special privilege in being able to witness an object as it returns to its base elements of dirt and dust.

In this case the moist climate along the San Mateo County coast provides ample water to keep the plants thriving. Their colors look quite lovely against the weathering surfaces and add an attractive dimension to the slow process of decay on this abandoned ranch house.

Happy Window Wednesday everyone.

Boarded up and abandoned. The weeds as high as a goat's eye. And goats are just what this property needs. A couple hungry goats would mow the weeds down to nubble in a day or two. Living in a critical wildfire zone causes one to cringe at the sight of overgrown properties like this one. Once you go goat, you'll never go back.

Happy Fence Friday everyone.

The grounds surrounding this abandoned ranch house continue to thrive in the most coastal climate. The garden is no longer tended by a loving hand, but it is no less pleasing to the eye. It has become wildly overgrown, driven by the characteristics of specific plants that have been left to grow as they will.

This ranch is a relative youngster in the abandonment and decay cycle. The process of growth and death, withering and decay, is slow work. In the beginning the tasks are carried out by the large organisms, the builders--humans and animals who work quite quickly. But on the downslope it is the micro beings--fungi, mold, and bacteria that carry the work over the generations to conclusion. A nice lesson in the cycle of life, yet not one you can observe firsthand for its duration. That's where photography comes in to play.

Happy Fence Friday everyone.

Draped along a small slope, directly across the road from the old general store at Stewart's Point, you'll find this sad and sagging old barn. In its demise it still offers a historical lesson--pay attention to the old body, otherwise you'll eventually find yourself sagging in all the wrong places.
