Hirschman's Pond is a short walk from our house. It's a great place to spend some quiet moments observing the life that has been enabled by this beautiful little body of water. Geese and ducks nest in the tule plants that surround the pond. During spring the pond is full of little goslings and ducklings tracking behind their mothers as they search for food. Turtles sun themselves on the fallen logs and exposed rocks, and if you're really lucky sometimes you will spy an otter darting through the water or lazily floating on its back soaking up the sunshine. And if nothing else, you can kick back and watch the dreamy reflections of the trees on the water.

"There are places I'll remember...." sang the Beatles in 1965. I myself have many of those places in my memories. Many of them are quiet places along a body of water, where the water spiders flirt along the surface, the dragon flies dart about like little helicopters, and the golden sunlight illuminates the water like the floor of a sacred temple. These are places where I can remove my shoes and waste an afternoon dangling my feet thinking about nothing in-particular.

During my travels with my camera I've discovered al handful of spots that have morphed into what I call my "quiet places." In most cases, these are go-to spots for when I'm feeling in need of a little peace and quiet from this crazy world we live in. This spot along Dry Creek fits the bill.
The old bridge dates to the beginning of the 20th century and is used for cattle and pedestrians only--and there are very few of either around. The sunlight on the still water is quite conducive to meditative states. Another great spot to remove the shoes and dangle the feet.

One of my favorite "quiet places" is this spot along the South Yuba known as the Kneebone. Upriver, beyond the distant rocks the river flows fast and heavy through the canyon. But here, the river enters a quiet spot where light and reflections reign supreme--another great spot to remove the shoes, roll up the pant legs, and engage in some serious foot dangling.

This "quiet place" is not so close to home, but I include it because it provided some well needed peace and quiet at just the right time.
I was hoping to catch some sunset shots from a bridge overlooking the Virgin River in Zion National Park. When I got there, the bridge was already crowded with what must have been 50 photographers, all of them jockeying for position with their tripods as they awaited the sunset. This was way too crazy for me, so I found a trail and followed it. After a mile or so I came to this quiet little spot where a small creek flowed toward the Virgin River. I didn't dangle my feet, but I did enjoy the quiet of a beautiful Zion Canyon evening.
