I was poking around General Vallejo's place in Sonoma when I saw this charming little fence scene.
Happy Fence Friday everyone.

While in Sonoma last week, I decided to drop in and see how General Vallejo was doing. Not much had changed as the old general passed away in 1890, but his former house was looking quite chipper. The house is now a California historical site, and they tend to pay a little more attention to cosmetics under those circumstances.
Sonoma is a great place for soaking in the culture that existed during the Mexican period in California. California has a colorful history replete with fascinating events with savory and sometimes not so savory individuals. Check it out. California is a far cry different than the myopic slander that's being promoted by our current commander in chief. And that's all I will ever say about that. :-)
Happy Fence Friday everyone.

I will be away for the next week or so. Marg and I are taking a run up the California coast to make sure that all is well along our northern coastline. CYA when ICYA.

Sonoma County in Northern California stretches from the rugged Pacific coastline to the bountiful wine country along the north San Francisco Bay. Along the way, the county is home to some of the prettiest rural scenery to be found anywhere. Ocean, grasslands, forest, vineyards, rustic ranch and farmland--the county is a microcosm of all that I love about the state where I live.
You can take the boy out of California but you can't take California out of the boy.

This is a great old country store. I had the best meatloaf sandwich ever here. Buffdawgus gives it 4.5 stars and says check it out.

I left Point Reyes behind and pointed the car north on Highway One toward Bodega Bay, the site where Hitchcock filmed his Audobon movie, "The Birds." I can't honestly say this was on my mind when I decided to swing by Bodega Bay. More likely I was in urgent need of a biology break.
In my humble opinion, the town has suffered a boon and a curse from the movie. The boon comes from the tourist dollars that are lavishly spent by folks wanting to take a gander at where a bunch of agressive birds conquered a town full of people. The downside is that the old gritty Bodega Bay has evolved into a world of glitzy restaurants , gift shops, and motels--Bed & Breakfasts for the more discerning customers. This all has very little appeal for a "couch and instant coffee" kinda guy like me
I stopped here for 30 minutes or so. Enough time to use the facilities in a high gloss tourist trap sporting a restaurant, fish market, and gift shop offering mugs, sweat shirts, caps, posters, and other items exploiting the Htichcock angle. I took a stroll and did manage to find an old fishing dock sporting some weathered fishing boats that brought back memories of a much older Bodega Bay. I took a few shots, then beat feet for less commercial pastures.
