A field of lupine leads the eye to a traditional Miwok dwelling. The Miwok people settled in the California Sierra Nevada Foothills centuries ago building their dwellings along creeks and rivers. They largely subsisted on acorns gathered from the copious oak trees that blanket the foothills.

I've always wondered about the process the Miwok went through to determine the acorns were in fact edible. The acorn is quite toxic to humans unless they are correctly blanched. For the life of me, I can't conceive a situation where I would keep trying to eat them after a few of my friends and family members died while eating them. But that's the way it is with inventions and discoveries. I'm amazed that somebody looked at a ball of cotton and visualized a shirt, or someone saw a loaf of bread in a grain of wheat. I could go on and on. Call it Coronavirus boredom.
