In moving down the hill to our new location we lost many of the tall evergreen trees like Ponderosa Pines and Cedars, but we gained many hardwood trees like Maple, Liquid Amber, Oak, and Birch. The snow on the Cedars was beautiful but the vibrant autumn colors of the hardwood trees are not to be denied.

It's hard for me to get used to all the houses in our new neighborhood, but not the trees. They're a nice offset to sharing a fence line with three different neighbors. The good news is that my neighbors are all nice friendly folks--and don't fences make for good neighbors?

This large Black Oak overhangs my backyard, giving me both joy and angst. The joy comes from its beautiful autumn canopy that absolutely glows in the sunlight. The angst comes from the gazillion acorns and leaves it continually drops, and it's nowhere done with its fall shedding process yet. Oh well, maybe I'll learn how to grind acorns and make bread.

Late December in the Foothills, and we've been graced with copious amounts of rain and snow. In between weather events, I decided to venture out and explore a nearby section of town. I'd driven through this neighborhood a gazillion times and always wrote it off as a not-too-interesting commercial district. Turns out, it is quite a bit more compelling than I thought.
Having said all this, what followed was several days of power-packed snow storms that knocked out power to almost the entire county. Lots of toppled trees and downed power poles. We were lucky to have moved to a more suburban area, so our inconvenience was much less than the rural areas. Our power was out for 36 hours and our house reached a chilly 48 degrees F. (8.8 C). But alas, alls well that ends well. The power returned and with it the heat and our morale.
