Life went on as normal for school boys in Alexandria in the war.
They participated in many sports, collected shrapnel, badges and stamps, drew war pictures, played with toy soldiers, rode bicycles, played ping-pong and joined the cubs, as we see in this photograph! My brother Michael, sitting second from right on the first row on the ground was at Victoria College which was evacuated to San Stefano, a lovely casino on the Corniche. Second on the left is Ladi Pathy - who also lived at Immeuble Adda, Rond Point, on the floor under us [see the telephone book scan for further details] . I am still in touch with a number of these pupils!
The master in the centre is RR Parkhouse - an England Football international.
The lady is Kitty Oumow from who was at my school the English Girls' College {EGC} - she was born about 1924 and died not many years later in Alexandria.
Her brother J Oumow is sitting next to Parkhouse - the cubmaster on the far right of the row could be another Oumow brother.
Boys in the picture are Shafferman, Nadler, Aghion, Elia, Gazayerly, Pathy, Cohen, Newby, Kohn, Souccar, Charbit, Nahas, Wissa, Cuneo, Stamford x 2, Martonaki,
Michael's particular friends were Emanuel Nadler [playing soldiers etc ] , el Nakeeb [ for cycling!], Johnny Shafferman [ping-pong], and Ladi Pathy ... also Axel Torok who was older and left for VC, Cairo and Stefan Brasch [VC Alex] who emigrated to Australia after the war.
A long time ago, I identified them all - I will have to find my list.
Michael left in 1945 for boarding school in England - my parents thought this was the way things should be done - I was left alone.
