SR/English Electric R.E.L. Maunsell designed diesel electric 350hp 0-6-0 shunter No.15202 (ex-SR No.2) in BR green livery awaiting scrapping at Cashmore's Scrapyard, Newport, 07/66. One of three SR diesel shunters, none of which were preserved, from which the BR(SR) Bulleid Class "12" shunters evolved. The engine was an English Electric 6K.
During WWII, these three shunters served with the War Department and were used on the Martin Mill Military Railway, hauling heavy guns (and ammunition) to fire across the English Channel. Diesel locomotives did not give away the guns' positions to German gunners in France. Scanned from photograph taken on a Kowa SET.
