What happens when your clients are fabulous and jet-setting, and can only meet you in the nighttime? What the heck, I say, embrace it. I shot 98 percent of this nighttime shoot without flash or tripod, just the great NYC ambient and some steady hands. I liked the challenge because it let me go to some areas I normally avoid as overdone (Central Park by the Boathouse, for instance) and give it a very different look than the hundreds of other shoots done there every week.

The title is a NYC-specific pun, since they're being lit by Amsterdam Ave.

As you may have gathered, I like to be a little nondoctinaire in my photography. If I see a bunch of photographers zigging right, I like to zag left, even if right was a perfectly fine direction. I do this for a few reasons: I think wedding photographers should be wary of fads because more than almost any other field we have to worry about what people will think of our photos in 30 years, and also it just keeps things interesting for me.

Here, Eva and Cris are standing in the exact spot of one of the most overdone locations in the world. It's hard not to walk by here and see an engagement or wedding shoot being done. But being able to shoot in twilight without flash let me tackle it in a new way, turning the dim tungsten light of the cavernous hall into what you see here.

Soon we'll all have cameras that can shoot ISO one billion and this won't be anything special, but it works for me now.

I'm on my way to a six-day destination wedding now. There will be some big announcements and changes when I get back, so hold on!

Some couples are shy to kiss in pre-ceremony portraits. Not Eva and Cris.
