Light traffic on a stretch of newly-built Autobahn on a breezy summer's day. A Volkswagen Beetle and an Opel convertible can be seen driving towards the photographer. This shot – bearing the stamp of a photographer's shop from Hermsdorf/Thuringia on reverse – almost certainly dates from the pre-war period, as Thuringia was to become part of the Soviet zone after 1945. The sight of a Volkswagen – then known as KdF-Wagen – must have been extremely rare, considering that only a small number of prototypes existed at the time.
