The Common Eider was very high on our list when we visited Iceland. Having already met with the Spectacled Eider, the Steller's Eider and the King Eider during previous trips to Alaska, this is the one that was missing in action. With 300,000 pairs in the Summer and all the way up to 800,000 pairs in the Winter, this is the most common Icelandic duck. A real joy to see it in large groups almost anywhere in Iceland from South Iceland all the way to the Northwest fjords. To photograph it under good conditions is another story. I found them to be an extremely shy duck and the nesting colonies are understandingly off limit.... I feel very fortunate to have been able to charm of few of them and to be able to photograph them... Off course they are responsible for a large part of my collection of 6000 Icelandic photos. But don't worry I will not post them all.
