The larva has disguised itself with debris. The actual larva underneath is long and thin. This larva looks like pacman when it roams around the leaf.

I'm always seeing mantid egg cases and was hoping I'd eventually see how they were created. When I saw this ootheca, I looked closer and saw it was just being formed. It must take quite a while, as I observed for several minutes, walked down the trail and when I came back it didn't look much different.
