I have seen this beautiful insect several times this summer but have a hard time getting it to land anywhere long enough for a good photo. To make matters worse, if I'm too persistent it flies at me. (At least two have done that so far this summer.) Not knowing if it is a readily stinging insect makes me unwilling to provoke it much--especially since as wasps go this isn't a small insect. But this afternoon I finally got a decent pose that even shows some of the blue in its coloring. This seems to be the great black wasp, Sphex pensylvanicus.
