Broad-headed sharpshooter, Oncometopia orbana. Quite a bit larger than the typical little hopper (slightly more than a centimeter), and more colorful too. Only my second sighting of this species, and I was happy that this one was too cool to try to get away from me. One can find more insects in the afternoon, but they're often easier to photograph in the morning, and so I vary when I go out.
