When I thought about what I might see on my first trip to my home state of Arizona in 20 years, only three wildflowers came to mind. I had been much more interested, as a resident, in the wildlife, the mountains, and the cactus. But the desert mallow came to mind. I remembered realizing that it's "related" to the marsh mallow (and that there is an actual flower by that time) and being in love with its bright orange blossoms. Eventually I also thought of the California poppies and Indian paintbrush. But this was the first wildflower I loved, and I was very happy to find it in bloom.
