Here the male is changing his position so he can bring the female up and fly away with her--not an easy maneuver to fly away with double your own weight.

For the second time I chose "insects" as my theme for the 100x. Last year I said I wanted 100 different insects (I included two or three arachnids as well), and this year I said I wanted 100 insects I didn't use last year, though I reserved the right to reuse an insect if I got it in a different phase. I was specifically thinking of monarchs, because last year I used a caterpillar, and I wanted to include a good mating shot if I got one. I accidentally used two photos of eastern pondhawks, one male and one female (just carelessness), but I think I have 99 species, and I think all but this one and one other are different species than I used in my 100x last year. I also used a dark-phase eastern tiger swallowtail this year though I used the standard yellow one last year.
