Flickr Lounge: A Favourite Photo from my Archives

I have gone back into my "archives" and found a few old favorites shot with a 35 mm camera that I loved at the time. This scene is one of the most photographed spots in America, present in one of the images of nearly every calendar of American scenery. Cathedral Rock at Red Rock Crossing, Sedona, Arizona. I particularly liked the rocks in the creek and thus interrupting the reflection . . . and making this image unique and different from all the other photographs I've seen that were taken at this lovely spot. I don't know if they showed up that day because the water was low, or because of the spot where I shot it, or what. I also like it that the colors in the reflection are more vivid than the colors they are reflecting. Shot in 1997.

PS After mentioning that this shot is frequently seen in calendars, I myself got a shot of this scene (albeit without the reflection) from 2024 printed in a 2025 calendar. :-) That photo shown in comments.

one of the most photographed spots in the USA, and one of the loveliest; taken with a film camera and scanned in, but I love this photo

I have gone back into my "archives" and found a few old favorites shot with a 35 mm camera that I loved at the time. In this instance, I loaded my old camera with black and white film so that I could take some black and white shots of favorite Arizona scenes along with the color shots I was taking with my new camera. I particularly wanted the Superstitions in black and white--a favorite scene from my childhood, a place once hiked to the top with my dad when the rest of my family elected to go only halfway. This scene just screams for black and white.

Unfortunately, I forgot that my old camera had a quirk. The first two or three shots on each roll of film would not print; the film had not yet been wound through adequately. I did not get my black and white shot of the Superstitions. But with the magic of modern processing, I have transferred this to black and white, though probably imperfectly. Shot in 1997.

I have gone back into my "archives" and found a few old favorites shot with a 35 mm camera that I loved at the time. In this shot, I was particularly interested in the accordion creases that allow the saguaro cactus to "plump out" after a good rainstorm, and the rows of spines. Probably shot in 1997.

I have gone back into my "archives" and found a few old favorites shot with a 35 mm camera that I loved at the time. I would love to get a chance to reshoot this with a better camera and with many more years of experience than I had in the 1990s when I took this. But I'll be honest . . . I probably wouldn't love the new, better photo more than I love this one, because this is a spectacular specimen and caught in full bloom. Shot in 1997.
