All seven species, with adult and juvenile of our largest species, the pileated woodpecker.
Left to right, top: adult red-headed woodpecker, male hairy woodpecker, male downy woodpecker; center: male yellow-bellied sapsucker, male northern flicker (yellow-shafted); bottom: two pileated woodpecker juveniles in nest, adult female pileated woodpecker, and adult male red-bellied woodpecker. All photos taken in Indiana, three counties represented. Red-headed woodpeckers cannot be sexed visually, but are the only Indiana woodpecker in which the juvenile is distinctly different from the adult.

I'm uploading a few old favorites. I see I already uploaded this one, but this one is cropped a little tighter, so I deleted my previous upload.

It was the kind of cold day that the birds like to sit in the sun and not move except to get something to eat. This male northern flicker gave me some decent chances to get his photo, and then I moved on to let him alone.

Proportionately, the northern flicker's tongue is longer than that of any other North American bird. Here he extends a good portion of it.
