Sitting on a branch with hoarfrost and snow on the ground, the color of the male cardinal pops--my first successful "cardinal in snow" shot, and one I could have only dreamed about as a ten- or twelve-year-old with her first camera. Notice that his feet seem to be completely covered by feathers as he fluffs up a bit to keep warm.

The hoarfrost-covered branches just begged for a bird, so I zoomed in on this female cardinal and took several shots. Her mate flew into the frame and stayed long enough for one quick shot.

It was actively snowing, and birds were coming in to get sunflower seeds. This group of three cardinals gave me a lovely winter scene.
