An unexpected sight! It ran up to the top and I got another shot silhouetted against the background, but it's a small insect and this is my clearest shot. Not a close-up, but there will be plenty of time for those in summer. Who expects insects and frost in the same photo?! I think this is a midge.

Although it was 65 degrees and sunny, I have had the flu for the last week and had slept in from church, and I resisted the sunshine's call to come for a long walk and compromised by leaning against a big rock and listening to the creek. Water striders came out of nowhere, and the soil moved under my foot (a vole, I think). It's spring! Southern Indiana.

Taken with the Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro Snap-On Lens and cropped to show the eyes better. I was sitting on the ground taking photos of the tiny chickweed blossoms when this fly landed. It's easier to take photos of an insect at 45 degrees F than 70, so I took advantage of a chance to get my camera close and get my first shots of an insect with the snap-on lens. Possibly a tachinid fly.
