Day 176/365

This juvenile had almost certainly already fledged, but it had returned to the nest to find scraps or to be fed. At any rate, having missed ten days of their development because of illness, I was thrilled to find it in the nest. Since one looked to be younger than its siblings (hawks start sitting on their eggs as soon as they've laid the first) and since fledglings may return to the nest after leaving it, I thought there was a good chance I'd see one, and was very much hoping I would. The light wasn't great and neither was my energy after two weeks out sick, but I did get a few shots and was pleased to find it eating.

Day 178/365

I went down to the park to see if I could find the red-tailed fledglings. Well, I suppose after a month out of the nest thet aren't fledglings anymore, but juveniles. Several sightings of redtails (two different birds) pursued by a fair number of other birds. I don't think this fledgling understood yet that sometimes it's safer to land when being pursued through the sky.

I'm uploading quite a few shots at the same time to get uploads more or less "up to date" after a couple weeks away.

Day 179/365

This little insect has several interesting features, and it's hard to get the right angle and the right focus to get them all at the same time--especially since this is a small insect and a flighty one. Fortunately in this instance, though it wasn't pleased with my presence, the temperature was too cool for it to do more than a couple half-hearted movements to the other side of the twig. I was soon able to get close enough for photos. There were actually two of them on the plant, but one was in a better spot for photos.

Flickr Lounge: Lacking Colour

This is looking down into the water from the bridge over it. Its role as a scavenger and its position as favored food of a few creatures (including raccoons) make ability to hide important for the crayfish. It tends to stay under rocks, but even out in the open it is well camouflaged. I just happened to see this one while I was watching a turtle.
