Flickr Lounge: weather

Season change tends to be fairly gradual, and I think of fall as coming in distinct thirds: In early fall, goldenrod blooms in abundance and wasps and spiders are everywhere, and leaf colors start to show hints of change, then in middle fall, leaves are a riot of color and some begin to fall; and finally we have the chilly last month, in which the trees are mostly bare, the insects are finished for the year, and temperatures can change drastically from one day to the next.

This photo was taken on the first day of late-fall, after a day that was predicted to possibly hit seventy degrees Fahrenheit and at least made it to sixty-eight. We hadn't yet experienced a killing frost and I knew where a good number of wildflowers were still blooming, and I headed over there . . . because the overnight low (and the following day's high) was going to be thirty-five, with snow, and that meant it was the last insect day of the year before a really drastic seasonal change into late fall/early winter. I posted those insect-on-flower shots yesterday.

I far and away prefer the warm months, and I hate to see the wildflowers and insects go--but it was glorious to have one last day with them. And I got many lovely flowers of the snow on these flowers the next day. I'm posting my favorites now, mostly one shot per species.

By far the latest I've ever seen pink ones. The next day these had snow on them.
