The lighting from the other side wasn't very good, so I went past the bird to see if it was better. Though that took me to the rear of the bird, it looked over its shoulder and I got the shot. Cooper's hawk, I think.

I sat out the 365 group in 2024, though it was a leap year and I had plans to go to Arizona in April for the first time in 20 years, because back to back years of the 365 (plus the 100x plus 100 flowers) was plenty and I needed a break.

I'm not completely committed yet, but I'll at least start the year and see what I think. I like the discipline of trying to get out every day (as I'm a nature photographer and highly prefer nature shots), but I also find it a bit stressful.

In 2023, I ended up getting an animal shot outdoors for 297 of the first 300 days of the year, or 99% (poster of January to October montages in the comments, with commentary on the link to that photo). I don't think I'll manage that this year, but it was satisfying to do it once.

It was a damp, cold day, and I'd come from a breakfast meeting that went twice as long as I expected, but I was determined to see the outdoors for at least a few minutes. The air was cold, and a cold wind blew strongly, so I contented myself with taking a few photos from my car and heading home.

This is one of my favorite trees, largely because it has such an interesting winter silhouette, but also because it is a good spot to look for birds. It isn't at all uncommon to find a single perched bird (sometimes a merlin) or several crows in the tree.

I ventured out to get photos of the snow on evergreens, but soon realized that if I walked another few blocks, I could find snow on the berries and possibly get some shots of birds eating them. So I continued. Mostly I found robins (but found lots of them); I also saw one starling and one bluebird, and on the way back even found some kinglets (though I didn't manage any good photos).
