Great blue heron in creek in southern Indiana. For more than 20 minutes a friend and I watched this heron from a foot bridge about 10 yard from the heron. It flew from the rock into the water, and back again, several times, caught a fish, preened, and watched for more prey. At the end, my friend (who is recovering from neck surgery) marveled at its movement and said, "I have neck envy." What follows is a portfolio of shots from those 20 minutes. I took shots from various spots on the bridge, but unfortunately missed the moment it caught the fish (I got the shot, but not in focus) and most of the flight shots. There was a lot of plant life between me and the bird from some of my viewing spots, and I had to choose my gaps.
I've already posted one shot of this scene, a portrait with an all-dark background. But here is the rest of the scene of this lovely heron. Photos are posted in chronological order. In these first couple, the angle makes it look young and awkward and vulnerable.
