Flickr Lounge: signs of the season (insect season!)
#Flickr21Challenge AND #bold

I was photographing an individual robber fly when this remarkable scene played out in front of me. I saw that the perched fly had one pair of legs raised defensively, but I didn't know if the fly in the air was attempting to court or attempting to grab the perched fly as prey. Not till I looked at my photos later did I see that the perched fly has a small insect--hardly worthy of theft, one would think, but the fly in flight might have been quite desperate!

Day 227/365
Flickr Lounge: action or motion
#Flickr21Challenge AND #beginnings

I don't know if this is the fledgling's first catch. This juvenile fledged either seven or eight days ago (depending on which fledgling it is)--or just three days ago, for that matter, though I doubt it's that one. It went quite deep into the water for its catch (shown in next two photos) and when it came out it flew around for a bit as though unsure where to go next.

It headed toward the nest but seemed to realize it risked losing its catch to a sibling if it did that. But it also chose not to fly toward the group of trees where the family members have been hanging out. It chose a tree in a different direction, far from family, in which to enjoy its prize.

Day 193/365
Flickr Lounge: photographer's choice
#Flickr21Challenge AND #family

June 1 my husband and I saw this doe and one fawn; though I suspected she had twins, this is the first time I have seen both. We have seen the doe several times (including chewing her cud with another doe in this same area), but fawns are only now really out and about and not hiding all the time.

Interestingly, BigHugeLabs shows this one as having hit Explore (#490) on July 14, 2023. If it did, not many people saw it and I sure never got any indication of that. (However, when I googled this date and Flickr Explore, sure enough it does show up as a photo down near the bottom. I'm guessing it was a late-in-the-day replacement.)

Flickr Lounge: Something That Really Makes You Smile
#Flickr21Challenge AND #artistry

The finished cards, ready to pair with envelopes, package, and mail. (They've been sent and received.) I chose about 30 of my bird photos to print out as black-and-white shots and hand color. Twenty made the final cut for a Christmas gift to my mother-in-law. She has asked for my cards every year since I surprised her several years ago with a selection of cards made from photos of flowers and birds in her garden. Usually I just have photo cards made, or create them myself, but this time I used a bit more creativity to make them. It was fun and I like the results, and she likes them too, so win-win.

The cards include two each of pileated woodpecker, great blue heron, eastern bluebird, and American kestrel, and one each of all the rest: Baltimore oriole, Carolina wren, pair of belted kingfishers, American goldfinch on sunflower, northern cardinal, red-bellied woodpecker with berry, common loon, red-shouldered hawk, killdeer (with chick), blue jay, barred owl, and dark-eyed junco/snowbird.
