The Music Project is a charity which aims to unite the next generation in post-civil war Sri Lanka by using music as a bridge language. They operate amongst several schools in the north and south of the country, with groups meeting several times a year for concerts using the skills they've learned.

Having worked with the charity before on their website, I was lucky enough to visit one of these concerts held in the north of the country. Watching the children play their instruments and have a good time in each others company, quite often not being able to directly communicate, was quite an experience of positive cohabitation.

As the children took a break from practicing for the concert later in the day, my unhealthy obsession with patterns led me to set my camera up to photograph this doorway and the corridor which ran alongside the classrooms on one side and the central playground on the other. While busy concentrating on the camera settings and pointing out certain things to some of the more inquisitive boys, I didn't even notice that this girl had stepped into the frame until I looked at the photographs later.

Her being there immediately made this my favourite photo of the day.
