Closed suddenly in 2007, after the theft of lead from the roof. It is a beautiful church built between 1890 and 1892 to a design by the Lancaster architects Paley, Austin and Paley. These pictures were taken in March 2014. I understand the church has been sold for alternative use which will preserve and repair the exterior features. Seven years of closure and I was impressed that there appeared to be no wanton vandalism outside but the interior has been affected by water ingress and fungal growth, especially on the pulpit. (I include my sadlyout-of-focus picture of the pulpit in this set with apologies!)

The C18 church of St Paul in Portland Square is now vested in the Churches Conservation Trust who have spent over GBP1Million restoring it. The space is now a Circus Training School "Circomedia", the pews have been removed and a sprung floor inserted and a cafe created under the west galley. This interior view clearly shows the trapezes and the dramatic use of full-height dark curtains to good effect! The church remains consecrated, the memorials and most fittings remain in situ and Circomedia welcome visitors to the west end where you can sip coffee and be entertained. Serious visitors wishing to see a feature inside the church should make an appointment. See more here www.circomedia.com/index.cfm/section.venuehire
