Although I am not sure, I suspect the clouds were enriched with smoke from regional fires, causing the sun to truly glow.

Surprise Valley in the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. The rock edge in the foreground is a reasonably sized cliff, and as the wind hit the cliff it created an updraft in which both White-throated Swifts and Violet Green Swallows appeared to love playing.

Purples infuse the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge on a January evening in SW Washington State. Though the visuals are tranquil, the refuge hosts hundreds of Trumpeter Swans in the winter, and their calls add a wild dimension to the experience.
