Another Stearman (aka Kaydet). Though the registration is not in the image, I'm pretty confident that this is N67344, s/n 75-6958.

This airplane carries the blue livery of an USAAF PT-17 trainer, but it was built in 1943 as an N2S-3 for the US Navy. The main difference between all the Stearmans/Kaydets (Army PT-13, PT-17, PT-18 and Navy N2S-x) is the installed engine.

Taken with my Nikon F3HP with an AF ED Nikkor 180/2.8 attached. Ektachrome Elite 100, digitized from a print.

The Boeing Stearman is sort of "the" classic airplane. Designed by Lloyd Stearman of Stearman Aircraft Corporation before Stearman became a subsidiary of Boeing. It was the primary trainer of both the USAAF and the USN during WWII.

This specimen is in the "Yellow Peril" livery of a US Navy trainer, it is an N2S-5 equipped with a nine-cylinder, 220hp, R-680-17 Lycoming radial engine. The Navy's N2S-5 is the same model as the Army PT-13D.

At the time the shot was taken it carried the registration D-EKAX, later it became N60MV (older registrations were: Bu.43266 and N65951).

Taken with my Nikon F3HP with an AF ED Nikkor 180/2.8 attached (that lens is great for manual focussing, I always had the 400 on the F4 and the 180 on the F3 when I went to the airport). Ektachrome Elite 100, digitized from a print.

Finally, for those interested, some data of the N2S-5 (USAAF designation: PT-13D):

First flight (Model 73): Nov. 26, 1934
Model number: Wichita 75
Classification: Trainer
Span: 32 feet 2 inches
Length: 24 feet 3 inches
Gross weight: 2,717 pounds
Top speed: 124 mph
Cruising speed: 106 mph
Range: 505 miles
Ceiling: 11,200 feet
Power: 220hp, R-680-17 Lycoming 9-cylinder air cooled radial engine
Accommodation: 2 crew

Captured short before touchdown at Braunschweig, Germany (EDVE). This Do 228, registration D-CODE, is owned by the DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) - Germany's national research center for aeronautics and space. The DLR Flight Facility Braunschweig has 5 fixed wing airplanes (incl. 1 glider) and 2 helicopters.

This particular Do 228-101 is highly modified for research purposes.

Data Dornier Do 228-101:

Length: 15.03 metres
Height: 4.86 metres
Wingspan: 16.97 metres
Seats:15 (fitted with only nine seats for DLR research purposes)
Empty mass: 3.7 tonnes
Total mass (MTOW): 5.98 tonnes
Engines: 2 Garret TPE 331-5, 715 shp each
Propeller: Four-blade Hartzell propeller - HC-B4TN-5 ML-LT 10574 AB (EL) model with reverse thrust
Range: 2,700 kilometres
Flight altitude: maximum 7,600 metres (25,000 feet)
Speed (VMO): 200 KIAS (<15,000 ft) / 165 KIAS (25,000 ft)
Endurance: 8 hours
Fuel tank capacity: 1,814 kg (4156 lbs) usable fuel

The following modifications differentiate the DLR's D-CODE from the standard Dornier Do 228-101 model:

- Meteorological sensors for measuring turbulence, pressure, humidity, and wind speed and direction
- Hardpoints on the outside and on top of the fuselage, underneath the wings, on the fuselage fore and aft sections, and on the nose of the fuselage. These can be used to install a nose boom with integrated flow probe capable of measuring airspeed, sideslip angle and angle of attack
- Extra cargo door in the left side of the fuselage (1.3 metres x 1.4 metres)
- Two openings in the rear cabin floor (20 centimetres x 60 centimetres and 50 centimetres x 60 centimetres) for experiment units
- A telescopic tube leading outside through the front cabin floor, for remote sensing purposes
- Two bubble windows at the rear of the cabin
- Power supply (28 volt DC, plus 115 and 220 volt AC) for operating experiments and the oxygen system which supplies breathing air to the crew members at altitudes of up to 7,600 metres (25,000 feet)
- High-precision IGI navigation system (Ingenieur-Gesellschaft für Interfaces mbH)
- Mounting rails in the cabin to install experiment racks
- Computer system for online communication and data transfer (down- and uplink) between the aircraft and the ground station

Photo taken with a Nikon F4E and a Sigma 400/5.6 AF ED attached, Ektachrome Elite 100, digitized from a print.

Lufthansa's D-CDLH "Berlin-Tempelhof" just after take off at Braunschwig, Germany (EDVE).

Note that the D-AQUI "registration" is just decoration for historical reasons. As an aircraft between 5.7 and 14 tons MTOW she has to carry a D-C... registration, Lufthansa did choose the D-CDLH letters because DLH stands for Deutsche Luft Hansa.
The letters D-CDLH are below the horizontal stabiliser.

Built at Junkers in Dessau, the Lufthansa Ju 52/3m made her maiden flight in 1936. Initially in service with Deutsche Luft Hansa, she then spent almost 20 years alternating between Germany and Norway. 1955 saw her finally taken out of service in Norway. Too large for a museum in Oslo, she was sold to South America where she flew in Ecuador from 1957 to 1963. Abandoned and exposed to the elements at the edge of Quito Airport, she fell into oblivion until an American airplane enthusiast rescued her in 1969. Later on, spectators were able to admire "Aunt Ju", now known as "Iron Annie", at air shows across the United States before she was purchased by Lufthansa in 1984 and painstakingly restored for Lufthansa's 60th birthday.

Some data:
• Type: Junkers Ju 52/3m
• Registration: D-CDLH

• Maximum speed (VMO): 250 km/h (135 kts)
• Maximum range: Approx. 825 km (445 NM)
• Endurance: 4 hours 20 mins.
• Length: 18.90 m (62 feet)
• Height: 6.10 m (20 feet)
