The eastbound Zephyr has quite a colorful (and new) consist! There is no P42DC to be found. Instead, a quartet of Siemen-built ALC-42s lead the train east. These new units will slowly replace the aging P42DC fleet, at least on long distance trains. The lead unit, AMTK 301, sports a 50th Anniversary celebration scheme. The remaining three units wear the Phase VII scheme, the newest scheme introduced by Amtrak and the official scheme, for the time being, moving forward.

Located high above Colorado State Highway 131, UP 1988 leads an eastbound coal load toward the end of the Craig Branch at Center Bond. To the left, you can see another coal load on the main at Bond. This train is on the Glenwood Springs Sub and on the Dotsero Cutoff. It will follow UP 1988 east toward Denver.

A good old Colorado snow storm dropped about five inches of snow at Plain overnight, giving way to partly cloudy skies today. Despite some sunlight, the temperature was only 5°F, keeping the snow on the vegetation. BNSF's orange looks great as a trio of GEs lead the Provo-Lincoln through the scene.

In fantastic golden light at the end of the day, the westbound Zephyr approaches a clear (green) signal at the east end of Thompson. In the distance, lurking in the shadows of afternoon thunderstorms, is the 12,331-foot peak of Mt Waas.

On a clear, cold morning after a February blizzard, the westbound Zephyr climbs toward the east portal of Tunnel 1 in a frozen winter wonderland. AMTK 130, the Phase II heritage unit, is second up on the train today. February is generally the coldest month of the year in Colorado and this day is no exception as the temperature is only 2°F (-17°C)!
