John Mackin, USS Colorado (SSN-788) Commissioning Committee Chair presents Maj. Gen. Mike Loh, Adjutant General of Colorado a plaque and coins, a gesture of appreciation for support for the USS Colorado, as the senior military member representing the state of Colorado and the Department of Military and Veteran’s Affairs.
On July 18, 2018 Colorado Governor John W. Hickenlooper received a museum quality model of the Navy’s newest nuclear submarine, the USS Colorado (SSN-788), also presented by Macklin and U.S. Navy Cmdr. Reed Koepp, Commanding Officer, USS Colorado (SSN-788).
The presentation celebrated the culmination of six years construction in which the state has developed a close “namesake ship” relationship with the crew and citizens of Colorado.
As the most modern and sophisticated attack submarine in the world, it can operate in both littoral and deep ocean environments and presents combatant commanders with a broad and unique range of operational capabilities. USS Colorado (SSN 788) is a flexible, multi-mission platform designed to carry out the seven core competencies of the submarine force: anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, delivery of special operations forces, strike warfare, irregular warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and mine warfare.
“It is exciting” said Koepp of commanding the brand new submarine. “It’s an opportunity to stamp a ship and a very talented and motivated crew of expert submariners with a sense of pride and enthusiasm.”
