Built in 1844, this structure is one of five functioning Antebellum courthouses in the state of Alabama. It is a contributing property to the Ashville Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Ashville is one of two county seats serving Saint Clair County. The county's other courthouse is in Pell City.
