This structure was constructed in 1966, the same year that the other Clay County Courthouse was built in Piggott in a nearly identical layout. They were each designed by the firm of Donnellan and Porterfield using the New Formalism style of Modern architecture. Both courthouses were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

Clay County is one of ten Arkansas counties with two county seats.
