The Adair County Courthouse was built in 1884-87 on the square in downtown Columbia. It was designed by the McDonald Brothers of Louisville and was built by William H. Hudson of Columbus Stone. It looks similar to a number of other McDonald Brothers courthouses around the country.

It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
