This lovely old wood-frame courthouse was originally built in Center City in 1876 using the designs and labor of John L. Bullard. It served as the capitol of Chisago County until 1990, and was the state's only remaining, working, wood-frame courthouse by the end of the 20th century. After the current Chisago County Government Center in Center City was expanded in 1990 to also hold the county's courtrooms, this building was removed to a rural site along Minnesota State Highway 95 between Almelund and Taylors Falls. The site seems like an historic outdoor museum, but the gates are often, if not always, closed to the public, as was the case on my visit. Fortunately, for my sake, the structure is mostly visible from the highway, but unfortunately it is too far away for a decent photograph. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but the removal of the building diminished its historical provenance and disqualified it from the listing.
