Built in 1977, this courthouse was designed by architect Keith Brakke.
Jackson County used to administer a seat-less county located to the south of the White River called Washabaugh County. But, in 1983 Washabaugh was absorbed into the rest of Jackson County. That merger reduced the number of counties in South Dakota without governments to two: Shannon (today called Oglala Lakota) and Todd counties.
