Đà Lạt, or Dalat, has a population of 406,105 as of 2015, of which 350,509 are urban inhabitants. The city is the capital of Lâm Đồng Province and is located 1,500 meters (4,900 feet) above sea level on the Langbian Plateau in the southern parts of the Central Highlands region. In Vietnam, Đà Lạt is a popular tourist destination.

Đà Lạt's most famous sights include its pine woods (resulting in its nickname of "The City of a Thousand Pines"), its twisting roads, and its tree marigold blossom (the dã quỳ). The city’s temperate weather stands in contrast to Vietnam's otherwise tropical climate. Mist covering the valleys almost year-round leads to its other nickname "The City of Eternal Spring."

With its year-round cool weather, Đà Lạt supplies temperate agriculture products for the rest of tropical Vietnam, for example: strawberries, cabbage, and cauliflower. Its flower industry produces two typical flowers: hydrangeas (cẩm tú cầu) and the golden everlasting (hoa bất tử). The confectionery industry offers a wide range of mứt, a kind of fruit preserve that closely resembles varenie, made from strawberries, mulberries, sweet potatoes, or roses.
