Built between 1511 and 1514, and featuring mostly Gothic and Renaissance styles, this palace is located near the Río Ozama in the Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo.
It is the only known residence of a member of the
Christopher Columbus family in the New World, that of his first-born son Diego Columbus. Columbus's grandchildren Juana, Isabel, Luis and Christopher were born here. Diego Columbus died in
Spain in 1526, but María Álvarez de Toledo, his widow, remained there until her death in 1549. Three generations of the Columbus family inhabited the residence, possibly until the late 16th century.
