This structure was originally erected in 1881 using the blended Italianate and Second Empire designs of Robert N. McGrath and W.M. Aiken. It was later expanded and altered into a more Classical Revival appearance during three remodeling efforts in 1901, 1924, and 1934. The 1934 remodeling used the designs of architect Willis Irvin. A final expansion, designed by Wells/Law Group, Inc., was placed on the building's south elevation in 1989.
